This was my first book by Mark Billingham and several books into the series about Detective Thorne, a hapless character with a past and secrets. His biggest issue is catching a serial killer, Nicklin, who always seems to be a step ahead of Thorne and the rest of the Police team. The pace of the story was excellent and the twist at the end I didn't see coming but too many questions were left unanswered and while this can be read as a standalone, readers in my bookclub who hadn't read the prequels were at a distinct disadvantage .I also didn't like any of the characters but the banter between them was very good. 4 Stars.
