We are only 5 months through the year and I’ve found my favorite read so far: Every Summer After by @carleyfortune! Where to start with this incredible romance/ summer lit book? Persephone spent every summer of her childhood at a lake in northern Ontario next to Sam and Charlie Florek. These boys were her best friends until it turns into more with Sam. Things are magical until that one moment when everything goes wrong. Years later, after a family death, she heads back to the lake where her life was change so many years ago. This book is absolute perfection. It gets everything right: the feeling of isolation when moving to a new area, childhood friends made in no time, first love, long distance friendships and romance, the death of a parent, even sibling rivalry. I loved the relationship between Sam and Percy; it felt so genuine and real. I had to keep reading to find out more. I needed to know what the big conflict was that changed everyone. It was so well executed! I can hardly believe this is a debut novel, but I’m going to need more from Carley immediately. I hope she’s working on new stuff! I would also love to shout out that Sam’s family restaurant serves Polish food and I would love to go to their restaurant. I would love to know what made the author decide to have them own a Pierogi restaurant! 🇵🇱 10 stars (5 doesn’t seem enough!)

Chris Blackwell (whom I knew reasonably well & whose music businesses our company represented for 30 years in parts of Europe) was an influential tastemaker for generations...particularly from the early '60s to the turn of the century. This book tells his story in rather honest, low key, factual but entertaining fashion. I am relieved by this as it's a story needing documenting-and the usually 'me me me egotistical' Paul Morley- was expected by many in the know to insert too much of himself into the proceedings. So good taste -or strong editing has prevailed and this is an entertaining and well recomended read.

A little long, but important nonetheless. The casual reader may want to start further along in the book (maybe the Carter or Reagan years) for the more current issues/people, but if you are willing to invest the time, it’s worth reading the entire book.

I can't quite believe this is book ten. And I say that as someone who came to the series very late and had a mammoth catch up read last year. I picked up on the series a couple of years ago when Mandie bought the first few books, and again when we saw Denzil Meyrick at Bute Noir a few years back. It's exactly my kind of series - police thriller, good humour, brilliantly memorable characters and a setting that stands almost as character in it's own right. I have mixed reading and listening to this series, including the spin off series Tales from Kinloch and all of the short stories and I have loved every last minute of it. This was no exception. I ate it up, finishing in disappointingly quick time. Disappointing for me that is - I have a long wait now for more news from Kinloch. Now if you haven't read this series at all (and why not?) then I would definitely recommend that you read the books in order, including the short stories, to get the full benefit of the backstory as this is the perfect tenth anniversary tale. It pulls together many threads and characters from past and present in a way that will elicit a whole gamut of emotions - from anger, to shock, to melancholy, right through to laughter and just damn fine satisfaction in the whole story. The action flits back and forth between past and present, setting up what is about to happen and giving us as readers a reminder of some of Scott and Daley's old nemeses. It also brings back to mind one of the most shocking tragedies to befall the residents of Kinloch in any of the books, not that anyone who read book nine really needs a reminder. Still reeling. I have really grown to love the characters of Jim Daley and Brian Scott. Both are flawed, and both bear battle scars, mentally and literally. it's fair to say that it's the psychological scars that are troubling Brian the most this time around, as readers of the series will understand, and he is in a really dark place at the start of the book. It adds a layer of conflict to an already tense story, and puts Brian in a tough position both professionally and personally. There is still a good amount of humour throughout the darkness, and his malapropisms continue to amuse as does a particularly awkward dinner over at the Daley's. As for Daley, he is under pressure to help Brian, do his duty as a copper and navigate the murky waters of a troubled relationship with his wife Liz ... Situation normal for him there then. This book is so multi layered that it would be remiss of me to say too much more about the plot for fear of giving something crucial away. Needless to say, the joy is in the reading. Lots of unspoken questions finally answered and perhaps one or two very unexpected revelations through the course of the book. There is a small element of the author's Tales from Kinloch series bleeding into this book, and the otherworldliness of Hamish and his gift of understanding, as well as a nod or two to other elements of the book that you really need to read to understand. The series are, afterall, two sides of the same coin. Set in the same locale just a few decades apart. It was a beautiful touch, one that left a smile on my face. It was a just conclusion to a certain story arc, but one which has also left a raft of new questions in its wake, the main one being - how the hell do you follow those last two books? Intense, emotional and with the authors unique blend of humour and experience, all wrapped up in a wonderful sense of place that springs so vividly to mind you can almost feel the fog wrap itself around you as it rolls across the shore. It's everything I didn't know I wanted from the series and more and most definitely recommended. Can I say it's a 'happy' anniversary? Yes, and no. Justice is served in a truly satisfactory and often pulse pounding way and who could ask for anything more than that?

I have the term debut set aside by quotation marks in the title of my review because, at fifty-seven years of age, I have voraciously read as many of Holly Black’s YA offerings as I could get my greedy hands on. (Or ought I to write, on which I could get my greedy hands? Proper grammar and usage is surely more adult, right?) Book of Night fits neatly into the author’s canon: her world-building, her inclusion of magic, her thoroughly-realized characters, and her astute almost preternatural grasp of exactly how much information and detail to feed her readers —and what to withhold— will all feel familiar in the best ways to her fans. Charlie, the novel’s heroine, has the grit, determination, and drive to pursue her goals. Charlie’s activities involve theft, larceny, and the art of the grift, and she tiptoes across dangerous tightrope strung above highly toxic, unprincipled foes. Charlie also works to protect her younger sister (sometimes from herself), and tries to figure out her complicated relationship with her secretive but gentle and kind lover, Vince, work. These traits make her intriguing, but it is the author’s deft handling of Charlie’s unorthodox past, her traumas, wounds (literal and figurative), insecurities, and disappointments that make the reader root for Charlie despite her faults and rash decisions. I am eager to read more of Holly Black’s adult fiction, and I’ll still gobble up her YA novels as well. This author truly delights readers of many ages. If you have not read her books, hie thee to a bookstore. You won’t be sorry.

I was wary of reading this book, let alone reviewing it. I've seen a LOT of people who are so into Kaggle that they don't understand that real-world data is FAR messier, complicated, and requires a lot of work before you get to the fun of modeling. I didn't want my review to help fuel more of that thinking. Thankfully, I was wrong. This book is so much more than a cheat sheet guide to winning Kaggle competitions. It helps the reader use Kaggle as a stepping stone toward an AI/ML-related profession, such as data science or ML engineering. It starts with the history of Kaggle before it spends most of the remaining pages talking about all respects of a competition. There are chapters on organizing data; using the Kaggle notebook environment; using their discussion forums; the various tasks and metrics seen in a competition; validating, modeling, and optimizing your models; bringing together different solutions for the best results; and specific advice for both computer vision, natural language processing, and optimization tasks. The book ends with chapters on building a portfolio both within and without Kaggle as well as finding professional work. If you're interested in Kaggle or machine learning, this is a great book to get you started.

Finally after 7 volumes Shinichi and Hana have come to accept that they like each other. Now all we need is for them to let each other know. Though it does seem like we are very close that confession. Here's hoping it will actually happen soon as I think it could open up all sorts of potential for the series. In no small part thanks to the entire Uzaki family. Hana's dad steals the show as he wants to protect his daughter but also as it turns out was friends with Shinichi beforehand. It might just be the funniest volume of Uzaki Chan Wants To Hang Out to date. Here's hoping it can brake free from the trope of waiting until the final chapter for a confession. -MickManga

This book should be required reading for all white liberals who want to know how to really make a difference in social justice and racial equity. This book isn’t easy; the author asks you to dig deep and confront some things about yourself you might not want to look at. But you’ll be glad you did. Kerri Kelly is also refreshingly honest about her own journey. She’s not preaching to the reader as a perfect person who knows it all. She’s right there with you owning her missteps and embracing messy vulnerability. I felt seen reading this book, but more importantly, I learned real ways to move beyond performative activism towards helping build a culture of community care. I like the books. They are in decent shape. However, I did not receive a boxed set. I received four individual books with varying degrees of wear and discoloration. It is obvious that this was not a set of books created for collection. They are individual books bought at various times (based on the discoloration and wear I noted above). This is definitely not what was described.

I researched the best books that could assist me with my Medical Assistant Certification and this got so many great reviews I decided To purchase it. I will Agree with the reviews. It was very thorough, detailed and helpful for what we need to test. It actually prepared me for more than what was on the actual exam but it’s been a great refresher. I’ve been in the field for 17 years took a 5 year break but wanted to get my certification to get back in the medical industry. I took My test 6/17/20 and passed!!!
